ABOUT
THE FUND
Mission:
The mission of the Greek Children's Fund (GCF) affiliated with Memorial
Sloan - Kettering Cancer Center (MSKCC) and Schneider Children's
Hospital (SCH) is to provide financial assistance towards the daily,
non-medical needs of Greek, Cypriot and Greek-American children
and their families. One of the primary objectives that GCF has achieved
is an endowed program at MSKCC that will secure its services to
Greek patients in perpetuity.
History:
Stanley Matthews, a Greek-American businessman, established GCF
in 1983 after a personal experience sensitized him to the needs
of families coping with cancer. Mr. Matthews made a pact with a
young cancer patient to provide emotional and financial assistance
to these families. As one of the
first, non-profit, philanthropic organizations of its kind in the
U.S. Greek-American community, GCF assists an average of 500 pediatric
and adult cancer patients a year. The driving
forces behind the growth and development of this dynamic organization
have been the efforts of its dedicated volunteers and the financial
support of the Greek-American community. The GCF committee is comprised
of over 25 members who strive to brighten the lives of children
with cancer and their families. The majority of these families come
from Greece and Cyprus seeking treatment for life threatening illnesses.
These volunteers organize fundraisers such as dinner dances, telethons,
walkathons and concerts to raise money and keep the patients hope
alive. To further assist
the Greek-American community, GCF established a relationship with
Schneider's Children Hospital in October 1998. Since then, GCF has
assisted an excess of 200 Greek-American patients and their families
at Schneider’s.In 1998, 'Hope
for Life' GCF’s Young Adult Division (GCF YAD) was created.
This division is comprised of college and graduate students who
volunteer their time and services to provide emotional and financial
assistance to the pediatric patients being treated at MSKCC and
SCH. GCF YAD functions as a separate entity with their own board
and committee members. Their diligent efforts build awareness about
GCF among young adults in the Greek-American community.
In the twenty
years since its inception, GCF and GCF YAD have established strong
ties with philanthropic and private organizations and businesses
in the New York tri-state that provide GCF with invaluable assistance
in its fundraising efforts. These organizations are always generous
in giving any resource they have available. The members of GCF and
GCF YAD will always be grateful to them for their boundless generosity.
